We took a few days to recover after Kilimanjaro and then booked a tour out to the Serengeti. We wanted to do a self drive tour as we’d enjoyed those the most previously but it proved a little difficult to find a 4wd so we eventually went with a guide and his 4wd. From Moshi we left in the morning and made our way out to Tarangire National Park. This park has one of the highest densities of elephants on the continent and it did not disappoint. After a day at Tarangire we spent the night in a town just outside the Serengeti. We left again the next morning, going past Ngorongoro Crater with a stop on the rim to look down inside it and then onto Lake Ndutu for the day. Its on the edge of the Serengeti and we’d had a lot of rain recently so the tracks were very muddy and the guides in this area didn’t feel the need to stick to any designated trails making it a very fun experiencing racing across the wilderness and lakebeds in search of animals. There were dozens of lions around the lake, all spread out in different groups of 5-10. We even found one lone cheetah roaming the plains in search of some food. We even got to see one lioness stalk and take down a zebra which was absolutely incredible. We camped that night inside Serengeti NP and were surprised to find the camp grounds were bare basic with no fences. When leaving the next morning, there was another group of lions eating the last of a buffalo they’d caught only the night before and this was all only a few hundred meters from where we were sleeping in tents the night before. A final day exploring the endless plains that are the Serengeti, marvelling at the herds spread out everywhere and again finding numerous lions, cheetahs and leopards. Back to Arusha for a few nights before calling an end to Africa for now.
