Japan – Noboribetsu and Hirafu Life

More trips away with friends and lots of deep snow.

Two days down in Noboribetsu, an onsen town south of niseko had us eating Japanese buffet dinner, relaxing in steaming onsens and exploring Jigokudani (Hells Valley), where a volcanic crater leaves a barren valley with bubbling sulphur vents everywhere.

Some of the buffet food. Highlights included all the types of tempura and sashimi and of course the red bean ice-cream.
Onsen robes and umeshu.
Hells Valley, sulphur gas from the crater.
Walking down into the valley.
Natural thermal springs. Walking in the snowy forest and then taking your shoes off in this. Heaven.
Some of the guys guarding Hell Valley.

Some other photos of adventures around Hirafu.

Mt. Yōtei on a clear day.
Soup curry and hot sake with B, Em and Miori.
Snowstorms dumping the powder!
My favorite part about going to the supermarket, tempura!!
Wine, scallion pancakes and Vietnamese rice paper rolls after shoveling snow.
Stunning views at dusk on the mountain.
Delicious home-made sashimi platter. Melt in your mouth goodness.
Love supermarket trips and finding fresh anko sweets.
