Germany – The Romantic Road

A train from Paris to Strasbourg where Megan, Jarrah and I hired a car and drove across the border into Germany. Our plan is to drive north to Würzburg and then travel South along the Romantic Road all the way to Füssen and back to Strasbourg over a few days.

We spent the first night in Heidelberg where we got a taste of the German architecture and more importantly German food; pork, sauerkraut, potatoes and beer, all in a beer hall.

First of the German beers in Heidelberg.
Schnitzels and all things pork related for dinner.

We got an early start the next morning and stopped in Würzburg. We went for a stroll around the palace gardens and then the river after sadly not being able to go on the wine tour because it was only in German.
That afternoon we drove further south to Rothenberg to spend a night at the hostel within the old walls of the preserved medieval town (built around the 13th Century). Pork knuckle for dinner and post dinner drinks in an old tavern style cottage.

The palace in Würzburg.
A stroll into town for lunch on the bridge (the place to be while drinking a glass of wine).
Beautiful views of the Main River.
Pork knuckle and sauerkraut with a potato dumpling.
Pork knuckle leftovers.

The next morning we walked around the walls and then back on the road towards Füssen. We raced the clock to buy tickets and ride on on the downhill summer toboggan. With Neuschwanstein Castle in the distance and the surrounding alps throwing out dozens of hang gliders we enjoyed the first proper day of sun and heat as we sped down the luge track at full speed.

Drinks and the typical thin crust Alsace pizza before driving into Füssen for dinner and mead. The next morning Megan and I were up early to go get tickets to Neuschwanstein Castle while Jarrah slept in. A tour through the fairytale castle built by King Ludwig II in the 19th Century. On the road again to cross back to France (just slightly upset you don’t get a passport stamp when driving across the border!!) and meet up with Jarrah’s parents (Susie & Burnsie) for a couple of weeks hanging out in the Alsace region of France.
