Guatemala – more mountains and bakery treats

No news to report this week. Still doing school things 5 days a week, 5hrs a day.

We went for a hike up the back of Xela into the farms behind the giant “Holywood” like sign that actually says Cristo Vive (Christ Lives). It was beautiful and green and full of growing produce. The many vicious dogs trying to have a go weren’t so pleasant. We had a couple of bouts of hysterical laughter after the actual danger had passed. One may have involved trying to get past what seemed like an unfriendly cow only to blindly run into someone’s yard with their dogs very unhappy about it. Needless to say we now know why all the people that walk around Xela carry sticks! After the farm walks we went for a look around the cemetery. Pretty tombs and lots of colours make it a must see.

We also hiked up to the Santiaguito Mirador (lookout). This is the volcano that has been having some pretty decent eruptions lately. It was a beautiful walk and view but unfortunately no explosions while we were watching. That night we met up with some friends for a few drinks and some live local music. The band had some killer covers of greenday and blink 182.

The week also involved two trips back to the Bake House and a morning of amazingly fluffy pancakes drenched in syrup and slathered in butter which in my opinion is the only way to properly enjoy them!
